How to remove and reapply tape-in hair extensions
Posted by Superhairpieces on 2021 Oct 26th
Tape-in hair extensions come with many benefits. They make your hair fuller, thicker and longer, and can be manually installed by the wearer which is a rarity with hair extensions that use a bonding adhesive. Perhaps the biggest benefit, however, is the fact that you can reuse tape-in extensions multiple times after your first installation.
To learn how to do this, Superhairpieces has provided the following tutorial on how to remove and reapply your tape-in extensions.
What supplies will you need
For the entire process, you will only require a few supplies:
- Adhesive remover
- Shampoo
- Clips
- Tape tabs
Removing tape-in extensions
At Superhairpieces, our tape-in extensions can be worn for six to eight weeks before they need to be reinstalled. In total, they can be worn and reinstalled a total of three to four times depending on how well-maintained they are.
Part of the maintenance process is removing them correctly which can be tricky for some. If done wrong, you may not only damage your natural hair, but potentially contribute to some hair loss.
With that said, here’s a simple and effective way to deal with the removal process:
- Remember to keep yours (or the client’s) natural hair away from the extensions before you attempt to remove the tape-ins. You can use clips to hold your hair up in place.
- You will need an adhesive remover next to loosen the tape of the extensions. We recommend the Hair Extension Remover from Walker or the KP Pro Solvent which are alcohol-based removers which leave no residue behind. Apply a generous amount over the tape until it is fully saturated and leave it for a few minutes.
- After a couple of minutes, you should be able to easily peel off the extensions using your fingernails. Keep in mind that when removing the tape, it should come off seamlessly and not stick on your natural hair. If this is happening, stop and apply more remover and let it soak for a couple of more minutes before attempting to remove again.
Before you re-tape the hair extensions
Now that you’ve removed your tape-in extensions, it’s time to reapply them. But before you do that, it’s important that you follow a few steps first.
The first thing is to wash your hair to remove any leftover residue on your hair. This allows the next tape-in installation to last longer. We recommend using the Extension Prep Shampoo which is a shampoo that specializes in removing residue. Do note that this shampoo is to be only used for residue-removing purposes and that it is not to be used as a normal daily shampoo.
The second thing you will need to do is clean the extensions. Simply lay the tape-ins flat with the sticky side pointing up and apply your adhesive remover on the extension tape tabs. Let it sit for a few minutes before removing the tape tabs off.
If it remains very sticky, you can also use a plastic card such as a gift or credit card to scrape off the residue after applying more remover. Alternatively, you can also add a drop of dish soap and mix it with the residue to loosen it up further.
How to get glue residue out of your hair or hair system
Once you’ve got the tape tabs and residue off, wash, apply shampoo and conditioner, and rinse off the hair extensions. Leave the hair extensions to dry. Once that’s done, it’s time to reinstall the tape-ins.
Re-applying tape-in extensions
Now is the part you came for. The extensions have been removed and the cleaning is done. It’s time to reapply your tape-ins!
Superhairpieces offers pre-cut hair extension tape tabs that are specifically designed for our extensions. There are 10 pages in each pack of tape tabs with 12 tabs on each page.
Alternatively, you can use No Shine Extension Tape Tabs. Just pull off one of the tape tabs from the page and carefully apply them where the original tape was. You can also cut around the tape beforehand to make sure it fits the extensions. Remember to keep the other side of the tape tab until you’re actually reapplying the extensions. When you’re ready, reinstall as always.
And that’s it! You now know how to remove and reinstall tape-in hair extensions. With this guide, you’re not only saving money from not having to pay for a reinstallation, but also by prolonging the use of your tape-in hair extensions!
