How to Care for Human Hair Wigs in Summer
Posted by Santana Fell on 2024 Jun 24th
Summer is officially here!
As temperatures soar and beaches crowd, our hearts and spirits double somersault, and we revel in these short-lived sunny days.
The Sun is undoubtedly showing off, turning up heat waves everywhere, accompanied by a happy tan and sweaty scalps.
No matter how much you want to flaunt your wigs or hairpieces, keeping them fresh and luxurious during this sweltering heat needs more attention.
Changing your hair care product every season to suit your scalp’s demand is no new thing. It helps to keep your hair looking its best no matter the weather. The same needs to be done for your human hair wigs as well. With all the sweat and dirt of the hot weather, they need even more care to continue looking their best.
As much as Summer beckons us outdoors to bask in the sunshine, there is no denying that our beautiful wigs are exposed to potential harm from the sun's UV rays, chlorine from pools, and the inevitable increase in sweat and oil production.
With the proper hairpiece care routine, your human hair wig can continue to look fabulous throughout the season. Here’s how:
1. Keep Your Wig Clean
Summer means more frequent washes for your bio hair due to natural oils, sweat, and product buildup. Even though your wig does not have natural oil, the sweat on your scalp can always impact it. Use a sulphate-free shampoo to gently cleanse your wig without stripping it of its natural moisture, which is vital for maintaining its shine and suppleness. Conditioning is equally essential; opt for a lightweight conditioner and leave-in conditioner that won’t weigh the hair down, focusing on the mid-lengths and ends. This will keep the human hair wig looking its best for a longer time.
2. Protect Your Wig from the Sun
Like natural hair, human hair wigs can suffer from sun damage. UV rays can fade hair colour, make the hair feel dry and brittle, and make it dull in appearance. When spending time outdoors, wearing a hat or a scarf is recommended to protect your wig. Alternatively, invest in hair care products that contain UV protectants to form a shield against sun damage.
3. Combat Chlorine and Saltwater
Swimming is a big part of enjoying Summer. Wearing human hair wigs while swimming in the pool or the open waters is safe; however, you should safeguard your wig before dipping it in by wetting it with fresh water. Hair that is already wet absorbs less chlorine or salt, which can be harsh and drying. After swimming, wash your wig thoroughly to remove any harmful chemicals or salt. You can use a shampoo to wash away chlorine or salt water.
4. Avoid Heat Styling
The summer heat is taxing enough; adding heat styling to the mix can lead to further damage. Whenever possible, embrace your wig’s natural texture. If you must style, always use a heat protectant spray first, and set your tools on the lowest effective temperature. Moreover, consider air-drying your wig instead of using a blow dryer to minimize heat exposure. Instead of using heat styles, opt for short hair wigs or updos to keep with the summer style while looking stunning and less bothered about your hair.
5. Use the Right Tools
Detangling is inevitable, especially if you spend a lot of time outdoors. Use a wide-tooth comb or a brush for wigs to untangle knots gently. Start from the ends and work your way up to minimize breakage and maintain the integrity of the hair. Using detanglers is like magic in a bottle; if they come with fresh scents, there is nothing like it.
6. Nighttime Care
Avoid going to bed with a wet wig, which can lead to matting and tangling. If you wear your wig to sleep, consider braiding it loosely or securing it with a silk scarf to reduce friction against the pillowcase, which can lead to tangling and split ends. A silk pillowcase is also suitable for reducing hair fall and matting.
7. Store Properly
When not in use, store your wig on a wig stand or mannequin head to help maintain its shape and prevent tangling. Keep it away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and high humidity, which can all contribute to deteriorating hair quality.
These tips will ensure your human hair wig remains pristine throughout the summer. Remember, a little extra care goes a long way in preserving the beauty and longevity of your wig, ensuring it continues to look as fabulous as the day you got it.
