How to sleep with a hair system

Posted by Superhairpieces on 2022 Oct 7th

There are always a number of doubts for those who are looking to get started with a hair system. Can you shower with one? Can you play sports while wearing a hairpiece? The answer to all these questions is yes, and the same applies to sleeping with a hair system on. But like most things, there are precautions and things you need to keep in mind so that your unit remains healthy and long lasting. We’ll be going through some of them in this blog so keep reading!

Make sure your system is secure

This is the most obvious thing to keep in mind, but many hair wearers tend to ignore it. Your hair system should always be secure before you go to bed. If it’s even a tiny bit loose, you can expect your hairpiece to lift off or move around as you sleep during the night. If you have nowhere to go the next day, this shouldn’t be a problem. On a weekday, however, it can be problematic.

There are two quick ways to fix this according to Superhairpieces stylist Stephanie. The first is to wear a durag or a tight bonnet and wrap it on your hair system so that it remains secure and in place throughout the night. The second is to use a blow dryer on a hot setting to help liquify some of the glue on your system. You can then use a cold setting on it before patting your hair system down on your scalp. It should be much more secure now. Of course, if you are experiencing daily looseness with your hair system, this is a sign that you’re due for maintenance.

Silk or satin pillowcase

Another way to keep your hair system long lasting while you’re sleeping with it is to change your pillowcase material. Many people still use cotton pillowcases today which is bad for one’s hair as it creates friction when one moves their head during the night. The end result is tangling and more hair shedding. As we’ve discussed in other blogs, hair shedding is the main culprit as to why hair systems go bad over time.

Instead, opt for a silk or satin pillowcase. This material not only feels better when you’re sleeping thanks to its soft texture, but also prevents shedding and hair fall as there is less friction when our hair makes contact with it. As a general rule, make sure to regularly clean your pillowcases at least once a week as well.

Consider a non-motion pillow

Speaking of pillows, you can also consider a non-motion pillow or one of those pillows specifically designed to keep your head in one spot. This is particularly great for those who are known for tossing and turning during the night which can lead to hair shedding. Instead, sleeping on such a pillow will keep your head in one spot and one direction. An added bonus to this is that it will also keep your unit more secure.

Don’t sleep with wet hair

One thing you should always avoid, even with your natural hair, is to sleep while it’s wet. Your hair has an even greater chance of getting tangled or matted when your hair is wet and you’re tossing during the night. Not to mention, the dampness can also lead to damage and excess shedding.

If you’re one who prefers to take showers during the night, try and schedule yours a bit earlier from your bedtime. On the other hand, you can also consider using a blow dryer for a more instant drying solution.

Avoid sleeping with a clip-on hair system

While it’s fine to sleep with hair systems if you’ve attached them with glue or tape, you should really avoid doing so if you’ve opted for tapes as your method of attachment. Clips are more for daily use for those who prefer to take them off at the end of the day. It would not only be redundant to sleep with one, but there’s also the potential for your hair ripping or being torn off as a result of the clips. Remember, clips attach to your natural remaining hair. Be safe and take your clip-on system off before you hit the sack.
